My 5 favourite still running tv shows

If I tried to make a list of all my favorite tv shows this would probably go on and on and on. But if I only include the ones which are not finished yet, the list immediately becomes a lot shorter as many of my all-time favorite shows (like Buffy the Vampire Splayer) have long aired their final episode. There are some other still-running shows I watch and enjoy (like Stranger Things and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) but I narrowed it down to my 5 favourite still running tv shows.

Do you share any of my favourites? Which shows do you love?

1. Game of Thrones

There's seriously no question which show wins first place. It has to be Game of Thrones. And just to make clear how much I love it: between Game of Thrones and all the other shows on this list there's a huge gap because I love Game of Thrones so much more. You probably all know what it's about: a war between noble houses in a fantasy world full of magic and dragons and creepy ice monsters coming to kill everyone and starting a long winter. Yep, it's pretty dark. But it's also so so good.

There are two types of tv shows on this list: first are shows which are well made and secondly shows which I just love irrationally. Game of Thrones definintely belongs to the first category. I know maybe two people who don't watch Game of Thrones. Because it's just a really excellent piece of story telling and cinematography and character building. A lot of this is probably due to the fact that George R. R. Martin laid the ground work in his books.

If I really started to talk about everything I love about Game of Thrones I could go on for hours. So I will just mention two things: 1. I love that all characters are multidimensional. You will find reasons to love and to hate every single character and this is really fascinating. 2. Everything which matters in our world like love and friendship and family and war and betrayal and finding your path is shown in Game of Thrones. Usually I'm not a High Fantasy kind of person, but though the world of Game of Thrones is in many ways different from ours, it is also very often scarily similar.

2. The Magicians

And we arrived at the second category which include shows I love though I don't really know why. I mean, I can totally see that the show is at times confusing and illogical and downright ridicolous. There's just too much happening without any explaining taking place and most of the time I wonder: What the hell am I even watching? But I still love The Magicians. It's my guilty pleasure.

The main reason why I love this show is that I absolutely adore the fantastic books by Lev Grossman which The Magicians is very very loosly based on. The books are a lot better, believe me. But even if the show is really different, there are still some of my beloved book characters in it. I love The Magicians because I can identify with these broken, mean, shitty but also lovable characters. Also, I have to say, that the show has even improved some of the characters to the point where I would like to be friends with them (this can be seen mostly with Penny but also Margo/Janet, Elliot and even Quentin to some degree).

3. The Walking Dead

Another guilty pleasure. I know, The Walking Dead has sucked so so many times. Actually I didn't even bother to watch many episodes of seasons 2-5 because I couldn't care less. But the last season, season 7, has been a lot better. The whole storyline around Negan (All Out War) is awesome and I enjoyed many episodes.

I think The Walking Dead's biggest strength is also it's biggest weakness. It is at times very slow. It takes a long time for anything to happen. Which is sometimes really nice because it allows us to get to know the characters and all their inner torments and I think that some of these slow episodes which focus on one or two characters are extremely well made. But there's a limit. At some point you just have to include some action and The Walking Dead likes to miss this point. It could use some of The Magician's fast pace and give some character work and calmness back. Nevertheless it's always fun to watch and I just love the question: What are people capable of in an apocalytic setting?

4. Girlboss

Let's step away from the fantasy genre and talk about a brand-new obsession of mine. I binged the first season of Netflix' Girlboss, which tells the story of the founder of Nasty Gal, in two days and I enjoyed it so much. Technically season 2 has not been announced yet but I'm pretty sure it will, so I'm counting it as still running.

The protagonist Sophia is absolutely fascinating. She's outspoken and strong and sassy and self-confident to a point were she is even kind of arrogant. Of course I like how she manages to achieve success, but my favorite parts were the ones when she hit rockbottom, when she failed. Which just proves that failing is normal on the way to success. Every twentysomething should watch this show, it's so inspiring.

5. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Here's another show which falls into the category very well-made. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is not a guilty pleasure but it's a pleasure I'm proud of because it's a show about how society sees women and the struggle which comes from that. Rebecca, the crazy ex-girlfriend, is so hilarilously and accurately obsessive and insecure and crazy that I sometimes don't know if I want to laugh or cry. It is very funny though while still talking about aspects of life where I think: And I thought I was the only one. Also it's a musical, so this is a plus.

Don't Sweat The Big Stuff

I'm 25 and it seems like daily I am bombarded with the big stuff: marriage, children, career, house, etc. Don't get me wrong, it is absolutely the time in my life to make these big decisions, and some of them will most definitely be made in this year. But still - give me a break for a moment!

There has been a lot of discussion on social media as well as in my real social circle on the question: children or career? It seems like especially of women it is expected that they choose one of these paths and somehow the whole world wants to know which path you're going to walk. Well, what if I want neither of these things? Neither kids nor a career are in any way a priority in my life right now. I'd much rather focus on spending as much time  as possible with the people I love and doing the things I enjoy. And this is absolutely okay.

Society wants us to constantly chase the next big thing, the next milestone in your life. Unfortunately many of those milestones take place in your 20s - so I'm in the middle of this crazy chase. Except I refuse to participate. Yes, I do want some of the big stuff but I want to be happy and conent on a daily basis a lot more than that. When will we start to realize that life is not about climbing a ladder or building the perfect family? It's about the small stuff.

What's the first question people ask when they meet a new person? It's mostly: What's your job? As if you could define a person by their job. But you can't. Instead of immediatly asking about their job, why don't we ask about what interests them, what's important to them, what they are passionate about, what they enjoy doing? For some lucky ones this will be the same thing they earn money with but for many others it won't. This is the stuff which really matters. The small stuff. What you do without anyone paying you to do it. What you are dreaming of. And most importantly the people you decide to share your time with.

So let's take a step back from the big stuff. Those decisions will be made when it's time. Instead we should truly enjoy the small things. Also, let's stop asking people when they're getting married, when they're having children, or what their next career move will be. If they are close to you, you will be told this stuff sooner or later. And if they're not close to you, then it's frankly none of your business anyway.
